My family decided to capitalize on my eight year-olds fascination with politics and government and take the family to Washington D.C. for vacation this year.
The first thing we learned, while doing a side trip in Virginia on the way to DC was not to take a vacation that requires lots of walking when your wife is six month pregnant and you have a one year-old. We stopped in Laury, Virginia and toured the caverns. The tour required us to descend 70 steps to get into the caverns and then walk about two or three miles before climbing up 68 steps. We weren't but half way through when we realized this was going to be a vacation that was going to require us to stop and take lots of rest.
Once we got to D.C., we walked the Capitol Mall from one end to the other and back...which is about four and a half miles. My wife did really well with all the walking...in 90 degree plus heat.
If you've never been to D.C., it's worth the time...most everything is free and at last all of the buildings are air conditioned.
