I just received a phone call about the death of one of my friend's son. My wife was reading an article from her hometown newspaper, The Union Daily Times, when she came across this article...
6-year-old boy dies after car rams minivan
By ANNA BROWN Staff Writer
A 6-year-old Union boy on his way home from eating pizza died Friday after his mother’s minivan was struck from behind by another vehicle. Joseph William Shick of 144 Greenway Drive was airlifted to Spar tanburg Re g i o n a l M e d i c a l Center, where he died after the 5:20 p.m. crash. Union C o u n t y Coroner William Holcombe said Joseph suffered head and chest trauma.
The wreck occurred on Highway 49 at the entrance to Fairwood II subdivision, where the Shick family lives. Joseph and his family were returning from Spartanburg, where they had eaten at Chuck E. Cheese’s.
Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Joseph’s mother, Dawn Shick, was stopped in the roadway, attempting a left turn and waiting on traffic when her 1999 Nissan Quest was hit in the rear by a 1997 Pontiac twodoor car driven by Kathy B. Patrick, 54, of 698 Bishop Road, Union.
McDougald said Joseph, who was wearing a seatbelt, was a passenger on the right of the third rear seat.
Also in the vehicle were Mrs. Shick’s three other children and her mother, Rickie Fowler of Union.
Mrs. Patrick was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center by Union County EMS. A switchboard operator said this morning that she has been discharged from the hospital.
McDougald said an investigation into the wreck is continuing and troopers are trying to determine if speed was a factor on Mrs. Patrick’s part.
Joseph was a rising first grade student at Foster Park Elementary School. He attended Mon-Aetna Baptist Church with his family.
