As I write this post, the house across the street from me is on fire. Apparently, the occupants put a cardboard box into their fire place this morning in an attempt to get the fire going and the box fell out of the fireplace, on to the floor and caught a pile of wood on fire. The pile of wood caught the wall on fire and then the fire just grew rapidly.
There's five children that live in the home. The oldest is a boy in high school, the second child is in the 10th grade the two youngest are in 3rd and 4th grade. The fifth child is a baby the family has been caring for for someone else.
I've offered my home for shelter and warmth and they've turned me down instead electing to stay in their van and watch the fire. While this family attends our church, they are not members. I have called the preacher and informed him of the fire so there can be an attempt at collecting food and clothing for the family.

Oh my gosh! Isn't that something to stand by and watch a fire? You feel so helpless to do anything about it. How nice of you to offer your home for them. I am also glad that you called your minister. Hopefully they will accept some help from the church.
how frightening adam...I remember waking up in the middle of the night once at the farm house in aitkin....I could see a big flickering light coming through the dark window coverings..when I looked out one of the turkey buildings was on fire...it was an eerie feeling..I am glad the family is ok and I am sure the church will come forth..my heart goes out to them....and they know your help is there if they need it..xo
That was nice of you to offer your house to them. Maybe they'll take you up on it later? Nice of you to call the minister. Prayers will be answered. How very scary to watch your house burn!
Adam,
I remember the feeling of watching a fire destroy a building that I had emotional attachment to. It is a powerful feeling of helplessnes, as Kara wrote.
Thank God no one was injured.
What great pictures, however, and on-the-scene reporting!
